The inspiring words of the great peacemaker Thich Nhat Hanh come to my mind as we prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day here in Killarney next Sunday March 26th. During his 2012 Killarney retreat he spoke to us about the eternal characteristics of parent child relationships, reminding us that our body is a gift from our Mother, Father, and Ancestors. A dream experience led him to let go of the idea that he had “lost” his deceased mother, and to the realization that his mother would always be alive within him.
‘All I had to do was look at the palm of my hand, feel the breeze on my face or the earth under my feet to remember that my mother is always with me, available at any time’ he writes in his book of Divine Wisdom ‘No Death No Fear’.
There can be no doubt about the significance of one’s Mother in the life of all spiritual seekers nor about the impact that our Mother’s story makes on our journey according to Mitch Albom in his book ‘For One More Day’. “Behind all your stories is always your Mother’s story, because her’s is where yours begins’.
Although the pace and demands of modern life seem to increase year by year, it will always be worthwhile to pause and remember in an intimate and prayerful way, the mother who gave us life. As we do, and as we recall how our journey has unfolded from conception until today, let us imbue our memory and thoughts of her with compassion .
Most people would acknowledge that there have been some disappointments and struggles along with the successes experienced on their path. Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to offer kindness and forgiveness as well gratitude to our mothers as well as ourselves. We know that a gift given is a gift received and that our mothers alway did the best they could at each moment in their life.
The tradition of holding a light for someone to illuminate their path has long been a ritual in Celtic and Eastern cultures. A supported and dedicated space for you to light a candle for your Mother in advance of Sunday’s Mother’s Day activities is being created.
In addition, it is intended that two visiting Buddhist teachers Vajra Acharya Douglas Sutton of the Dari Rulai Temple in Los Angeles and Mary O Connor of the Cork Chinese Esoteric School will lead us in a meditation and will chant an ancient Great Compassion Mantra as a loving dedication as we honor our Mothers whether living or in memory and all mothers everywhere.

Douglas Sutton: Vajra Achrya
From a young age Douglas has felt compassion for those who were suffering, including our mother earth and all her creatures. At University he studied psychology, philosophy and sociology, wishing to understand the roots of our suffering and how we can create a more harmonious world. This was when he was introduced to Eastern philosophy and began to study Massage and Consciousness Based Healing.
Douglas met Enlightened Buddhist Master Yu Tian Jian, 49th Lineage holder of the Chinese Esoteric Buddhist School in 2000. After witnessing Master Yu Tian Jian perform a number of extraordinary healings Douglas became an Initiate/Diciple and began to study these methods . Douglas was blessed to live with and travel with Master Yu both in the US and China.
Douglas met and received blessings from a number of Enlightened Buddhist Masters. Exposure to the language and culture of China nourished a growing appreciation for the many strands of wisdom and knowledge that are bound together in traditional Chinese culture. The experience of day to day living in China also taught Douglas to have greater flexibility and non judgement.
Today Douglas’ mission is to embody Buddhist and Taoist spiritual wisdom and empower others by teaching them ancient wisdom and healing practices. Douglas teaches profound meditation and healing methods that have been passed down through an unbroken lineage of enlightened masters for thousands of years.
These techniques allow us to know ourselves and change ourselves, and to love and uplift others.
